We recently had the opportunity to sample a shipment from The Rare Beer Club, and we're here to tell you that it is definitely not your average beer club! Here's what our shipment looked like. We received two 750 mL bottles, securely packaged on all sides to ensure their safe delivery. Each one also came with a two-sided sheet full of interesting information about the beer, it's unique brewing process, extensive tasting notes, and even food pairing suggestions.
Beneath that secure packaging, we found what we were looking for -- two delightful and rare beers:
Mélange à Trois, a Barrel Aged Reserve Series beer brewed by Nebraska Brewing Company
Simple Means brewed by Jester King Brewery in Austin, Texas
The Mélange à Trois is a Belgian-style blonde ale that pretty much sums up everything a beer should be. Not too light, yet not too heavy. It's basically the beer Goldilocks would have chosen if she were a beer drinking gal. We loved the flavor -- richer than your average ale thanks to the Chardonnay barrel aging process. There was a substantial frothy head that stayed on the beer for several minutes after it was poured. This beer was lovely to sip on during a warm summer afternoon, but it would also been a nice drink to enjoy while sitting by a fireplace in the winter. At 10.0% alcohol by volume, it packs quite a punch, so this is one to enjoy slowly with a meal or a long conversation. While it's tempting to drink it at the pace you would a regular 4-5% beer, you'll quickly realize you're not dealing with your average store bought ale. We would definitely order this one again from The Rare Beer Club.
The second selection in our beer club delivery is called Simple Means, yet it is anything but simple. This selection is a smoked malt beer, which is really just a big middle finger to every light beer out there. Simple Means was one of our first experiences with smoked beer, and it's probably somewhat of an acquired taste for many beer drinkers. One of our honest first impressions was, "It tastes like I'm drinking a campfire," but, being consummate professionals, we bravely continued on to see what other flavors presented themselves in this complex brew. After the initial shock wore off and our palates became accustomed to the smokey essence, we noticed some interesting and surprising flavors. Hints of vanilla and caramel came out, and we even detected some berry-like sweetness hiding in this dark brew. Despite the strong tasting notes, Simple Means is 5.6% alcohol by volume, and would be well paired with steaks or anything fresh off the barbecue.
Whether you're a seasoned snifter sipper or brand new to the world of microbreweries, The Rare Beer Club gives all beer drinkers alike a chance to try new beers from both up-and-coming and well established breweries. A subscription to The Rare Beer Club is an easy and affordable way to expand your beer horizons, and it makes a great gift for almost any occasion.
